The four EMTs work for LifeShield, reporting to its owner Naheem Asnai (Brian George). Wyatt has disappointed his father, Dr. Martin Cole (David Clennon), chief surgeon of Samaritan Hospital in Portland, by not following in his footsteps. Worse still, he has recently been dumped by his girlfriend, Alice Alden (Elizabeth Reaser), who did finish medical school and is now often on the receiving end of Wyatt’s emergency runs to Samaritan. Alice has moved on to Dr. Daniel Lanier (Andrew Airlie), a widower and another surgical colleague.

Saved promises not only the thrills of emergency rescues—and a few near misses—but also some involving character development. Wyatt will have to deal with his father’s determination that he return to med school, he will undoubtedly have to cope with his gambling demon, and he’s going to need to decide how he really feels about Alice and whether he’ll continue to pursue her. One tom everett scott of the series (cynics might call it a gimmick) is the use of flash montage sequences, presented from Wyatt’s point of view, that provide a quick glimpse into the back-story of each of his rescue subjects, almost as if he has a sixth sense about these things. And Wyatt is not the only character whose private life is scrutinized, so that the series shows signs of being more character-driven than tom scott medical dramas. In blueprint, Saved resembles Grey’s Anatomy more than E.R. or House, but, in the first hour, at least, it avoids going after easy laughs by having the characters betray themselves with patently foolish behavior, as Grey’s is often wont to do.
